How to Write the Perfect Tweet

You’ve only got 140 characters to create a meaningful message. That’s what makes Twitter so tricky, so appealing, and so challenging.

It can take a while to get the hang of Twitter. After all, most of us entered the world of social media with Facebook, which doesn’t limit the amount of characters you can use in a post. In fact “Facebook rants” are a genre all their own. People don’t have to edit themselves or concentrate on being concise. Perhaps that’s why many business people tend to prefer Twitter over some of the longer form social media formats.

If you decide that Twitter is a good way for you to establish your branding, reach out to potential customers and contacts, and direct traffic to your website (and yes, Twitter is helpful for reaching all of those goals), you’ll need to start tweeting.

Forget About Sentences

We’ve been taught to write in complete sentences since we were kids, but when you tweet, try to adopt a different mindset. Consider what kind of statement you want to make, and then just make it without worrying about whether or not you used a complete sentence.

Twitter’s 140-character limit is more than enough for making a statement and attaching a link, but if you try to write tweets like you write emails, you’ll find yourself frustrated.

Be Savvy with Hashtags

There’s something a little desperate about a tweet that contains too many hashtags. It seems to say, “Somebody! Anybody! Please read me! Please!”

While it’s true that hashtags can help your tweets to show up on trending search lists, be judicious in the way you use them. Before you use a hashtag, look it up and see if it’s currently being used. If it was used for a conference back in 2015 but hasn’t been used much since, skip it. If you can incorporate a hashtag into your statement, use it. Here’s an example:

Put a Little Promise in It

Write tweets that offer something to followers. Some tweets offer humor. Some offer information. Some offer links to 6 tips that will increase #productivity. Make it clear what you’re promising, and people will take you up on your offer. Use action words, as people respond to verbs more so than nouns.

Use Compelling Visuals

More and more tweets are accompanied by images and videos. For the most visibility, attach a visual to every tweet. Try to vary your visuals. You can create images on programs like Canva that promote blog post titles or promotions. You can use photos, infographics, and gifs.
